mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?
spoiler alert: it's not snow white
remember our last potty talk?
(if you missed it, check your spam)
well, it made quite a splash! π¦
so I asked you lovely lot on twitter/X:
"what should we dive into next?"
and boy, did you deliver! π¬
one brilliant mind suggested:
"why are indians obsessed with fair skin?"
challenge accepted! πͺ
ready for another wild ride?
buckle up, we're heading to India!
grab your sunscreen and let's go!
(SPF 50+, of course)
first things first:
this isn't just an indian thing
but hoo boy, does india
take it to another level!
bollywood stars lighting up screens π¬
(and we're not just talking talent)
matrimonial ads screaming
"wanted: fair and lovely bride"
talk about a fair-y tale obsession!
but why? WHY? WHYYYYY? π«
time for a history lesson, folks!
(don't worry, no pop quiz)
rewind to ancient times:
fair skin = indoor life = wealth
dark skin = outdoor work = poverty
fast forward to colonialism:
enter the mughals and british, exit self-esteem
centuries of being told:
"white is right"
even our gods got a makeover!
krishna means "dark," but he's often blue!
mix in some clever marketing:
"fair = success" billboards everywhere
add a sprinkle of bollywood magic:
fair heroes, darker villains
evil wears black
and voila!
a recipe for color complex disaster
but wait, it gets worse!
dark-skinned brides? more dowry demanded!
job applications? some don't even apply!
but hold up! there's hope!
new generations are saying:
"enough is enough!"
dark is beautiful campaigns π€
celebs embracing their natural skin
it's a slow change, but it's happening
one melanin-loving step at a time
if you arenβt bored yet, hold up!
let's talk science π§ͺ
(don't worry, i'll keep it fun)
melanin: nature's sunscreen
and brown skin? it's got LOADS!
if you didnβt know, melanin is a superpower πͺ
it protects against UV rays
slows down skin aging
and fights free radicals!
more melanin = more protection
it's evolution, baby!
so why chase "fair and lovely"
when you're already fabulous?
mother nature knew what she was doing
she made you perfect, just as you are
so, next time you hear:
"you'd be prettier if you were fairer"
remember: you're gorgeous as you are
mic drop. π€
stay curious, stay rebellious
and love the skin you're in! π
until next time,
