tick tock, why do clocks... clock? πŸ•°οΈ

spoiler: it's not because "clockwise" sounds cooler than "counterclockwise"

i was staring at a clock (as one does)

and suddenly i thought...

"wait, why does it go that way?"

well, strap in, folks

'cause we're about to take a spin

through the history of timekeeping!

first things first:

clocks run clockwise because...

drumroll please πŸ₯

...sundials!

yep, those ancient solar-powered time-tellers

are the OG clock designers

but wait, there's more!

(isn't there always?)

in the northern hemisphere

(where most clock inventors lived)

sundial shadows move... you guessed it

clockwise!

but hold up, southern hemisphere peeps!

your sundials go the other way

(cue aussies wondering why their clocks are "upside down")

if you don’t get it, here…

now, you might be thinking:

"but why didn't we just flip it for the south?"

well, by the time folks got down there

clockwise was already the cool kid on the block

(sorry, counterclockwise, you snooze you lose)

fun fact:

some early clocks actually ran counterclockwise!

(rebels, am i right?)

but standardization won out

and clockwise became the time-telling queen

now, let's address the elephant in the room:

what about digital clocks?

well, they're just copying their analog ancestors

(imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?)

but here's the deal:

our whole "clockwise" obsession

might be because most people are right-handed!

turning things to the right just feels... right

(lefties, we see you, and we're sorry)

and there you have it, chaos lovers!

the twisty-turny truth about clockwise motion

stay curious, stay timely

and always keep your days... chaotic!
